Supplementary Accessory Sets
Initially Palitoy followed Hasbro’s lead, and apart from changing GI Joe’s name, fell in line with established plans, releasing three action figures: a soldier, sailor and pilot. These figures came dressed in the most rudimentary outfits – especially the ‘Action Pilot’, which came garbed in bright orange overalls with a blue US peaked fatigue cap on its head. To be honest, this was a disappointment to youthful purchasers at the time, of whom I was one, especially as the figure’s box seduced us with a striking image of a jet pilot bedecked in full flying gear, including ‘bone dome’ and a parachute harness slung over his shoulder.
But this was the key to the success of GI Joe, Action Man and, of course, Barbie: purchasers were required to continuously acquire supplementary accessory sets if they were ever to achieve the desired effect. Current legislation would make such ‘misrepresentation’ difficult – today’s customers have a right to expect that they will receive what is shown on the box – and this is one of the reasons why, in the 1980s, Airfix dropped its striking Roy Cross artwork in favour of rather blander photographs of a single assembled kit, which removed any suggestion that there might be more than one aircraft, vehicle or ship in the box. To achieve a result close to the illustration of the fighter pilot shown on the GI Joe box, purchasers were obliged to buy at least three accessory packs: a flying helmet with oxygen mask, the parachute and harness, and the life vest that came complete with utility knife and scabbard.
